On Rúa da Raíña, or Queen’s Street, a traditional promenade in Lugo. A parish church dedicated to St James since 1859, it formerly belonged to the now-defunct Dominican convent that was established there in 1363. At that time, its patron saint was Saint Mary, and it was known as Santa María A Nova (The New) to distinguish it from the Cathedral, which is also dedicated to the Virgin Mary. However, no remains of the original monastic buildings survive. The present church was built in the 18th century. Subsequently, the building was altered to fit in with the general alignment of the street, and the new Neoclassical façade was constructed under a municipal licence granted in 1914.
