An archaeological site, situated in a basement on the central Calle Doutor Castro – formerly known as Calle Batitales – comprising the remains of a large domus or stately residence from the Roman period which, given its considerable size and rich decoration, must have belonged to a distinguished citizen of Lucus Augusti. Its main attraction lies in the rich ornamentation of the floors and walls in some of its rooms. Of particular note are two mosaics featuring geometric and figurative motifs that once paved the house’s large reception hall (oecus) and its antechamber, parts of which are also preserved beneath the present-day street. Other notable features of the house include the remains of a triclinium or dining room, which features a radial heating system beneath its floor (hypocaustum), and part of one of the porticoed courtyards that flanked the oecus.
