Roman Lugo
Roman bridge
A historic bridge with Roman foundations, forming part of the Primitive Way to Santiago, offers a picturesque route from the city walls to the River Miño.
On Roman Road XIX, which linked Lugo with Braga, the Romans had to build a long bridge to cross the River Miño.
In the Late Middle Ages, the bridge underwent restoration and alterations, and several repairs were also necessary during the Modern Age. Finally, in 1893, another alteration was made which removed its characteristic central hump
caused by the change in gradient of the double slope. However, the foundations of the current bridge – known as the ‘old’ or ‘Roman’ bridge – are still largely the original ones.
The so-called Calzada del Puente descends from the Porta Miñá in the city walls to the bridge itself. This Roman road has since been, and still is, part of the Primitive Way pilgrimage route to Santiago.
