Built in the Baroque style and with a certain air of a rural manor house, it stands opposite the cathedral, with which it frames the beautiful Plaza de Santa María. The main doorway is surmounted by the coat of arms of Bishop Cayetano Gil Taboada, under whose leadership the work – which had begun in the early 18th century – was completed. On the same site stood a late Gothic palace, built around 1480 during the episcopate of Bishop Alfonso Enríquez de Lemos. Some parts of this were incorporated into the new building; one such feature is the section with a balcony and gable that projects from the centre of the building, bearing the coat of arms on both sides with the
