Church of Santo Domingo

Church of Santo Domingo

A Gothic church with a Latin cross plan, polygonal apses and ribbed vaults. Its dome and the south façade, with its Baroque decoration, are particularly note...
It stands in Santo Domingo Square and is now linked to the convent occupied by the Augustinian nuns; it formerly belonged to the Dominican convent, which is first recorded in 1274. The work on the transept dates from the mid-14th century. Despite the alterations and additions, the church essentially retains its Gothic structure and interior beauty. It has a Latin cross plan, and the chancel consists of three polygonal apses with ribbed vaults, featuring tall windows with trefoil-shaped tops. The central nave and the transept are covered by pointed vaults; the central nave is crowned by a dome. The south entrance is set within a Baroque portico supporting a tall section of the building with square windows. It is a very beautiful doorway, with a pointed arch formed by three pairs of columns and four archivolts featuring exquisite decoration.
