Provincial Council Building

Provincial Council Building

A historic two-storey building with a symmetrical façade in the classical style and a back garden featuring magnolias, situated next to the Roman wall.
It occupies almost an entire side of Rúa de San Marcos; on the other side there are beautiful houses with balconies. Construction began in 1866 to house a provincial hospital, but upon its completion in 1874, it was converted into the headquarters of the Provincial Council (which remains there) and the Secondary School. It is a huge two-storey building, with a symmetrical front façade and three rear wings, in a style very characteristic of the period, with the main sections clad in fine carved granite. Its rear faces the Roman wall and features a simple garden where magnificent magnolias thrive.
