Route of the Huts

A nature and ethnographic trail featuring lush vegetation, diverse wildlife and cultural features such as mills and bridges, ideal for nature lovers.
The Ruta das Chousas is one of the most visited and well-known environmental and ethnographic trails in our municipality. Its name comes from the fenced-off wooded areas known as chousas. The route runs alongside the River Mera, in the rural parish of Veral, where the Nature Centre is located, offering information and advice to all visitors. ROUTE This route begins at the Veral Nature Centre and follows ancient paths teeming with lush vegetation and numerous elements of our folk culture: fences, bridges, mills… The most common tree species along the way include birches, hazel trees, willows, oaks, chestnut trees, holly trees and cork oaks… as well as some shrubs such as cranberries and boxwood. As for wildlife, it is easy to spot otters, dragonflies, pin-tailed ducks, trout, frogs, magpies, blackbirds and shrikes.
