Roman Baths

Remains of Roman baths featuring areas for bathing, exercise and worship in the ancient town of Lucus Augusti.
The Roman Baths of Lugo preserve the remains of an ancient public bath complex dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. Although only part of the original complex has been excavated, its size and structure give an idea of the importance it held for the city. The site is organised into several areas, notably the ancient changing room (apodyterium), consisting of vaulted rooms built of stone and featuring remains of the original flooring. An area linked to physical and social activity has also been preserved, which would have formed part of a palestra or courtyard used for exercise. The excavations also revealed a large concrete pool and several altars dedicated to the nymphs, suggesting that this complex served not only a hygienic function, but also therapeutic and religious purposes.
