University Museum: The Domus of the Mitreate

The remains of a Roman house featuring a unique place of worship dedicated to the god Mithras.
The Domus do Mitreo preserves the remains of a large Roman house built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries. This archaeological site offers an insight into what life was like in a well-to-do home in ancient Lucus Augusti, with rooms arranged around a porticoed courtyard. During the excavations, an altar dedicated to the god Mithras was discovered; a deity of Eastern origin closely linked to the Roman world, making this site one of Lugo’s most unique historical finds. The visit also allows you to see the remains of wall paintings and small everyday objects, such as board games and personal care items, which help to imagine how the inhabitants lived almost two thousand years ago.
