The Primitive Way of St James

A section of the Primitive Way, passing through rural countryside, the historic centre and the Roman Bridge in Lugo
The Primitive Route enters the municipality of Lugo from the rural area of Castroverde and runs through the municipal area until it leaves to the west, heading towards Guntín. Along this stretch, pilgrims pass through both rural landscapes and the historic city centre, on one of the most comprehensive stages of the Camino de Santiago. Entry into the municipality (rural surroundings) The route enters Lugo through farm tracks, small hamlets and areas where the countryside meets the city. As it progresses, it gradually approaches the outlying districts, where the rural landscape gives way to the urban environment. Urban and historic section The route enters the city and passes through some of its most iconic sites. The Camino crosses the Roman Wall through one of its historic gates and winds through the old town, passing through traditional streets and alongside the Cathedral of Santa María. This section allows pilgrims to discover Lugo’s architectural heritage as they make their way towards Santiago. Leaving the town After leaving the historic centre, the Camino descends towards the River Miño and crosses the Roman Bridge. From there, it returns to the natural and rural setting, passing through villages and along quiet paths until it leaves the town in the direction of San Román da Retorta.
