Roman Wall

The Roman wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which surrounds the historic centre of Lugo.
The Roman Wall of Lugo is the city’s most important symbol and one of the finest examples of a preserved Roman fortification in the world. Built almost two thousand years ago, it completely encircles the historic centre and marks the origins and growth of the ancient Lucus Augusti. The wall stretches for over two kilometres and visitors can walk along its top, offering one of the city’s most unique experiences. From the wall, there are also unique views of the historic centre, particularly from the area around the Torre da Mosqueira, one of the few remaining examples of the original towers. Declared a World Heritage Site in 2000, the wall features several historic gates providing access to the old town, such as the Santiago, San Pedro, Porta Nova, Porta Falsa and Porta Miña gates, which connect the Roman past with the city’s present-day life.
