Via Künig

Historic St James’s Way route leading to Lugo and connecting with the Primitive Way to Santiago
The Künig Route is a historic variant of the Way of St James described in the late 15th century by the monk Hermann Künig von Vach. In the municipality of Lugo, this route serves as an approach to the city, where it eventually joins the Primitive Way. Entry to the municipality (rural surroundings) The route enters the municipality of Lugo from O Corgo, passing through a landscape that transitions from the countryside to the outskirts of the city. It is a peaceful stretch, with wide paths, green spaces and few pilgrims. Approach to the city As it approaches the city centre, the route links with natural areas such as river corridors and tree-lined paths, facilitating a gradual entry into the city. The route combines rural areas, outlying neighbourhoods and local connecting roads. Access to the city centre The route enters the city via the outer neighbourhoods and proceeds towards the historic centre. This section marks the transition from the modern surroundings to the old town, with a gradual approach to the walled enclosure. Connection with the Primitive Way Within the historic centre of Lugo, the Vía Künig joins the Primitive Way as it crosses the Roman Wall. From this point, the route continues along the city’s main monumental streets towards the Cathedral.
