Santa María Square

Santa María Square

A historic square featuring Roman ruins and the Bishop’s Palace, situated next to Lugo Cathedral.
Praza de Santa María lies behind the Cathedral and is one of the most evocative spots in Lugo’s historic centre. Its peaceful atmosphere and heritage value make it an essential stop on any visit to the city. The square preserves the remains of a 4th-century AD Roman pool, visible through a glass panel that allows visitors to view this archaeological find in the heart of the city. This relic provides a direct link to the city’s Roman past. Presiding over the complex is the Pazo Episcopal, a building constructed in several phases that stands out for its façade and the coat of arms of Bishop Cayetano Gil Taboada. The square invites you to pause and calmly contemplate the imposing presence of the Cathedral.
