Inland Northern Route

A section of the Way of St James passing through the countryside, the city of Lugo and connecting with the Primitive Way
The Northern Inland Way is a historic route of the Way of St James that links routes in the north of the Iberian Peninsula with the interior of Galicia. As it passes through the municipality of Lugo, it first traverses rural areas, then the urban area, and finally joins the Primitive Way in the city’s historic centre. Entrance to the municipality (rural surroundings) The route enters Lugo from the north through agricultural landscapes and small traditional hamlets. It is a peaceful stretch, featuring country lanes, meadows and wooded areas with few pilgrims. Peri-urban section As it approaches the city, the surroundings transform into transitional zones between the countryside and the urban outskirts. From certain high points, the silhouette of Lugo can be seen before entering the city. Entry into the city and connection to the Way of St James The route enters the city centre via the outer districts and proceeds towards the historic centre. Here it joins the Primitive Way, passing through the Roman Wall and following Lugo’s main monumental streets. Leaving the town From the historic centre, the route continues southwards, crosses the River Miño via the Roman Bridge and leaves the town in the direction of Guntín, continuing on towards Santiago.
